Dromore Castle is a 16th-century tower house located within Dromore Wood Nature Reserve in County Clare, on what was once a small island in Dromore Lake. Built by Teige O’Brien, a member of the powerful O’Brien family of Thomond, the castle served as a fortified residence during a period of political conflict and change in Ireland. The castle remained in the hands of the O’Brien family for much of the 16th and 17th centuries before being abandoned in 1689 and gradually falling into ruin. Despite its partial collapse, surviving features such as its entrance tower, stairwell, guard room, fireplaces, and defensive elements provide valuable insight into medieval Irish castle life. Today, Dromore Castle is a protected National Monument surrounded by woodland and lakeside scenery. Its picturesque setting and historical significance make it one of County Clare’s most atmospheric and interesting heritage sites.
