The site combines the remains of a 16th century O'Keeffe clan tower house with a Gothic Revival country residence built in 1806 by Thomas Justice, creating an unusual blend of medieval and 19th century architecture. The castle stands on elevated ground near a steep river cliff and was once an important local stronghold of the O'Keeffe family. Over the centuries, the property changed hands several times, and the later mansion incorporated parts of the earlier fortified tower. Today, Duarrigle Castle survives as an atmospheric ruin surrounded by trees and countryside.
