Dunbeg Fort is an ancient Iron Age promontory fort located on the dramatic cliffs of the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, overlooking Dingle Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Built more than 2,000 years ago, it was designed to defend a narrow headland using thick stone walls, earthworks, and guarded entrances, making it one of Ireland’s most impressive prehistoric fortifications. The site was occupied over many centuries, with evidence showing continued use into the early medieval period. A distinctive stone beehive hut, known as a clochán, stands within the fort, while other ancient stone structures can be found nearby. Today, Dunbeg Fort is a protected National Monument and one of the most famous archaeological sites on the Dingle Peninsula. Its spectacular coastal setting and long history make it a popular attraction, although ongoing cliff erosion and storm damage continue to threaten parts of the monument.
