Dunhill Castle is a medieval ruin located on a rocky cliff overlooking the Anne Valley in County Waterford. Built by the Anglo-Norman La Poer (Power) family in the early 13th century, it occupies a strategically important site that may have been home to an even earlier fortification. Its name comes from the Irish Dún Aill, meaning “fort on the cliff.” The castle was expanded with a tower house in the 15th century and served as a stronghold for the Power family for centuries. Its dramatic history includes local conflicts, power struggles, and eventual capture and damage by Cromwellian forces in the 17th century. Today, the remaining tower and walls stand as an impressive landmark above the surrounding countryside. Visitors are drawn by its rich history, striking setting, and panoramic views, often reached via the scenic Anne Valley Walk that connects the castle with the nearby coast and village of Dunhill.
