Dunmanus Castle

Dunmanus Castle is a well-preserved 15th century tower house located on a rocky outcrop overlooking Dunmanus Bay in County Cork, on Ireland’s southwest coast. It was built by the O'Mahony clan, a powerful Gaelic family that controlled much of the region during the medieval period. The castle was designed both as a residence and a defensive stronghold, featuring thick stone walls, multiple floors, a smaller attached tower, and even a dungeon. Its elevated coastal position provided excellent views of the bay and helped protect important local trade routes. Over the centuries, Dunmanus Castle witnessed conflict during the Tudor conquest of Ireland and eventually passed from the O'Mahonys to English landowners. Today, the structure remains an impressive ruin and is regarded as one of West Cork’s most notable medieval landmarks, admired for its history, architecture, and scenic setting.
