Dunmore Castle is a historic medieval castle located near the town of Dunmore in County Galway, Ireland. Originally built around 1225 by the Anglo-Norman de Bermingham family, it served as an important defensive stronghold during a turbulent period of Irish history. Over the centuries, the castle was attacked, damaged, and rebuilt several times, including during conflicts involving the O'Connors, the Ó Floinn family, and the Bruce campaign. Today, the most visible remains are those of a five-storey rectangular keep standing on a small hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. The structure features thick defensive walls, fireplaces, mullioned windows, and other architectural details that reflect its long history of occupation and renovation. The castle eventually fell into ruin in the 19th century and is now a protected National Monument under state care. While visitors can view the exterior, internal access is generally not permitted. Dunmore Castle remains an important landmark that offers insight into Ireland’s medieval past and the region’s Norman heritage.
