Dunsoghly Castle

Dunsoghly Castle is a well-preserved medieval tower house located near St. Margaret’s in County Dublin, Ireland. Built around the mid-15th century, it is traditionally associated with Sir Thomas Plunket, a prominent judge, and remained in the hands of the Plunket family for several centuries. The castle stands four storeys high and is especially notable for retaining one of the last surviving original 15th-century wooden castle roofs in Ireland, which has served as a model for restoration projects at other historic Irish sites. A small chapel dating from 1573 stands nearby, adding to the site’s historical significance. Today, Dunsoghly Castle is a National Monument under the care of Ireland’s Office of Public Works. Although there is generally no public access because it is located on private farmland, the castle remains an important example of late medieval Irish architecture and was famously used as a filming location for the 1995 movie Braveheart.
