Durrës
Albania, Albania
Durrës is a coastal city in Albania on the Adriatic Sea, about 34 kilometers west of the capital Tirana, and it is both the country’s oldest city and its main seaport.
Founded around the 7th century BC by Greek colonists under the name Epidamnos, it later became an important Roman port called Dyrrachium and has seen Illyrian, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman rule, which left behind a mix of walls, castles, and Roman ruins.
The city is known for its large Roman amphitheatre, one of the biggest in the Balkans, medieval fortifications, and a long stretch of sandy beach that turns it into a popular summer resort. Today Durrës is Albania’s second‑largest urban centre, combining working‑port activity, a busy beachfront promenade, and a lively mix of modern hotels, restaurants, and nightlife along its coastline.
