El Castellot
Castellví de la Marca, Spain, Spain
El Castellot in Castellví de la Marca, Catalonia, Spain, is an early medieval fortress known as Castrum Vetulum, perched at 468 meters on a rocky hilltop overlooking the Penedès plain and defended by the Marmellar river gorge.
First documented around 977 AD as the central stronghold of the Castellvell family, it served as a frontier watchpost during the Marca Hispánica against Muslim territories, featuring a circular main tower, angle tower remnants, perimeter walls, and nearby Romanesque church of Sant Miquel ruins with dual naves.
Abandoned by the 13th century, the symbolic site now offers exceptional panoramic views and represents key Reconquista-era defenses in the region.
