El Chaltén
Santa Cruz Province, Argentina
El Chaltén is a small mountain village in southwestern Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, officially recognized as the “National Capital of Trekking” and located within the northern sector of Los Glaciares National Park at the edge of the Patagonian Ice Field. Founded on October 12, 1985, primarily for geopolitical reasons to strengthen Argentina’s sovereignty near the Chilean border, the town now thrives as a world-renowned trekking hub surrounded by iconic granite peaks including the jagged, 3,405‑meter (11,168‑ft) Mount Fitz Roy and the 3,102‑meter (10,174‑ft) Cerro Torre, both famous among climbers and hikers globally. The village offers dozens of well-marked trails for all fitness levels, ranging from easy half-day walks like Laguna Capri and Cascada Chorrillo del Salto to challenging multi-day expeditions to Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Torre and Mirador del Torre, with breathtaking views of turquoise glacial lakes, ancient forests, waterfalls and snow-capped peaks. Visitors can also enjoy mountain biking, horseback riding, kayaking on Río de las Vueltas, boat tours to Viedma Glacier, and wildlife spotting for condors, guanacos and elusive pumas, while most tourism services operate between September and April when weather is milder and trails are snow-free. El Chaltén’s rustic mandala-style village features colorful buildings, alpine lodges, hostels, camping grounds, local tour operators, gear shops and cozy restaurants serving Patagonian lamb, making it an ideal base for 3–4 days of adventure in one of the world’s most dramatic natural landscapes.
