El Peñón de las Juntas
Spain, Spain
El Peñón de las Juntas is a Chalcolithic archaeological site from the Los Millares culture, dating 2500-2000 BC, located in Abla, Almería province, Andalusia, Spain, on a rocky spur at 812 meters elevation overlooking the Nacimiento River. It features a 2-hectare settlement with dry-stone slate walls forming three concentric enclosures, rectangular towers, and housing remains on the southeast slopes, paired with a nearby necropolis at Los Milanes containing tholos tombs accessed via perforated slabs and corridors. Declared a protected cultural asset in 2006 with recent excavations revealing Islamic-era pottery from the 8th-9th centuries Emirate period, it highlights early Copper Age defenses and burial rituals amid the region's rugged terrain.
