Eyrecourt Castle is a historic 17th-century country house in County Galway, Ireland, built by Colonel John Eyre after he was granted land following the Cromwellian conquest. Constructed in the 1660s, it was one of Ireland’s earliest classical country houses and marked a shift away from fortified medieval castles toward grand residential estates. The house became famous for its elegant architecture, particularly its magnificent baroque wooden staircase, which was considered one of the finest examples of 17th-century craftsmanship in Ireland. In the early 20th century, the staircase was removed and eventually became part of the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts in the United States. After remaining in the Eyre family for generations, the estate declined, and the house gradually fell into ruin. Today, Eyrecourt Castle survives as a roofless shell, but it remains an important landmark in Irish architectural history and a reminder of the influence of the Eyre family on the village of Eyrecourt and the surrounding region.
