Verified Fenit

Ireland, Ireland

Fenit is a small coastal village in County Kerry, Ireland, located on the north side of Tralee Bay about 10 km west of Tralee town, just south of the Shannon Estuary, and its Irish name An Fhianait means “The Wild Place” though the exact meaning is unclear.

It functions as a mixed-use sea port and is home to Ireland’s most westerly commercial port in Europe, where fishing boats, cargo ships and leisure craft operate from a 136-berth marina alongside freight import/export and fishing businesses. Fenit beach and harbour have long been a popular swimming spot, featuring a marked swim course and hosting the Tralee Bay Sailing Club, an Open Water Swimming Club and annual triathlons, while the village also overlooks Tralee Bay with stunning views of the Dingle Peninsula’s mountain range.

Saint Brendan the Navigator was likely born near Fenit on Fenit Island around 484 CE, and a large bronze monument in the harbour honors him. Visitors can book sailing courses, kayak on the waters, walk the Brendan Way heritage trail that runs from Fenit to Lerrig Cross in Ardfert, and explore local pubs, restaurants and B&Bs, with Fenit Island being a populated island connected to the mainland by a sandbar and enclosing Barrow Harbour.
