Fethard Castle is a medieval castle located in the village of Fethard-on-Sea on the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, Ireland. Originally associated with a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification dating from around 1200, the surviving stone castle was largely built during the 14th and 15th centuries and served as a residence for the Bishops of Ferns. The castle is notable for its distinctive L-shaped design, circular tower, gatehouse, and well-preserved medieval features. It played an important role as both a fortified residence and an ecclesiastical center during a period of political unrest in the region. Later owned by the Loftus family of nearby Loftus Hall, the castle eventually fell into disuse and became a ruin in the early 20th century. Today, it remains one of County Wexford’s most significant historic landmarks, offering visitors a glimpse into the area’s Norman and medieval heritage.
