Fiddaun Castle is a well-preserved 16th century tower house located near Tubber in County Galway, close to the border with County Clare in the Republic of Ireland. Built by the O'Shaughnessy family, a powerful Gaelic clan, it served as both a residence and a defensive stronghold during a turbulent period of Irish history. The castle rises six storeys high and is notable for its impressive limestone construction, spiral staircase, defensive features, and surrounding fortified enclosures known as bawns. Its location between Lough Doo and Lough Aslaun provided natural protection and strategic advantages. Today, Fiddaun Castle is recognised as a National Monument of Ireland and is maintained as an important heritage site. Although it stands in a rural setting on private land, it remains one of the finest surviving examples of an Irish tower house and offers visitors a glimpse into the country's medieval past.
