Fort de Bernia
Spain, Spain
Fort de Bernia is a 16th-century fortress built in 1562 by Italian engineer Giovanni Battista Antonelli on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Bernia mountain range near Callosa d'en Sarrià and Altea in Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain.
Commissioned by King Philip II to defend coastal settlements from Barbary pirate raids, the hilltop structure at around 850 meters elevation protected inland Morisco populations and offered surveillance over the Mediterranean, though its remote position limited effectiveness.
Demolished by order of Philip III in 1612 to prevent enemy use, its ruins now attract hikers via scenic trails like the Forat de Bernia route, providing panoramic coastal and mountain views amid ongoing archaeological excavations.
