Fortaleza de Santa Engracia (Ruinas)
Spain, Spain
Fortaleza de Santa Engracia is a ruined 18th-century military fortress located atop the Obarenes mountains in Pancorbo, Burgos province, Castilla y León, Spain, built between 1794 and 1797 under King Carlos IV to defend the strategic Pancorbo pass against French revolutionary forces during the War of the Convention.
Equipped with 173 artillery pieces, 600 horses, and space for 10,000 troops, it complemented the nearby Fuerte de Santa María but was abandoned after the 1796 Spanish-French alliance, later seized by Napoleonic forces in 1808 until its surrender to Spanish troops in 1813 amid the Peninsular War.
Finally razed in 1823 by French "Cien Mil Hijos de San Luis" troops to prevent liberal use, its evocative stone remnants now overlook the Ebro corridor as a testament to Spain's turbulent late-military era.
