Fortaleza de Sarria
Spain, Spain
Fortaleza de Sarria is a historic fortress in Sarria, Galicia, northwestern Spain, originally constructed in the 13th century as a military stronghold owned by county lieutenants through royal grants, including figures like Enrique de Trastámara and later the Catholic Monarchs.
The structure once featured a large enclosure, four towers such as the Homenaje and Mercado ones, basements, moats, and internal houses, serving as a residence for royalty like Carlos I and Felipe II, as well as the seat of local justice until the 18th century.
It suffered major destruction during the Irmandiña Revolt in the late 15th century, was partially rebuilt, but largely dismantled by 1860 when sold by the Duke of Alba, leaving only one preserved tower about 15 meters tall with granite stone, coats of arms from the Castro, Enríquez, and Osorio families, and nearby 18th-century Via Crucis crosses.
