Forte de San Damián
Spain, Spain
Forte de San Damián is a 17th-century bastioned fortification in Ribadeo, Galicia, northwestern Spain, built in 1624 at the mouth of the Ribadeo estuary to defend the port against threats like Dutch and English fleets during conflicts such as the Eighty Years' War.
Named after the Marquis of San Damián who oversaw its initial construction as an artillery battery, it was destroyed in 1719 by an English raid, then rebuilt in 1763 by military engineer Francisco Llovet and further in 1774 with cannons from Seville, featuring a square layout with a large walled courtyard, defensive battlements, and loopholes.
Acquired by Ribadeo City Council in 1965 and declared a Cultural Interest site in 1994, it now serves as an Interpretation Center showcasing its military history and role in protecting the medieval town's shipbuilding and trade hub.
