Fortress of Bashtovë
Albania, Albania
The Fortress of Bashtovë is a well‑preserved medieval quadrangular castle in central Albania, near the mouth of the Shkumbin River and about 2 kilometres from the village of Vilë‑Ballaj in Tirana County. It sits on flat, fertile ground close to the Adriatic coast and was strategically positioned to control both the river valley and a section of the ancient Via Egnatia, which linked east and west through the region. The fortress is thought to have been built by the Venetians over an earlier Byzantine structure, with a roughly rectangular layout, high stone walls, and corner and mid‑wall towers, and it now appears on Albania’s tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status as a rare example of a flatland fortress reflecting centuries of trade, military history, and coastal defence.
