Positioned in a scenic valley amid Ottoman-era architecture and natural surroundings, it protected the monastic site through turbulent periods including destruction by Turks around 1960 and damage in 2001, with subsequent EU-funded restoration preserving its cultural significance as part of the area's layered Byzantine and Serbian heritage.
