Foulksrath Castle is a well-preserved medieval tower house located near Jenkinstown in County Kilkenny. Its origins date to the 14th century, when the estate was associated with the De Frene family, while the present castle was largely built by the Purcell family in the 15th century. The castle takes its name from Fulco De Frene, an early owner of the estate. The five-storey limestone tower was designed for both defense and residence, featuring thick walls, a moat, battlements, a spiral staircase, defensive openings, and a fortified entrance. Over the centuries it passed through several families and survived periods of conflict, including the Cromwellian confiscations of the 17th century. In the 20th century, Foulksrath Castle was rescued from deterioration and operated for many years as one of Ireland’s most famous youth hostels. Today, it remains an important example of Anglo-Norman and medieval Irish architecture, admired for its strong historic character and remarkable preservation.
