The city has a rich industrial heritage, originally dominated by textile factories in the 19th century and later by heavy industries such as steelworks and coal mining, with modern industries including machinery and automotive manufacturing nearby.
Architecturally, the city features landmarks such as Frýdek Castle, Baroque churches, a synagogue, and a historic old town center. During World War II, it was part of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.
