Fuente del Maestre
Spain, Spain
Fuente del Maestre is a historic municipality in Badajoz province, Extremadura, southwestern Spain, situated between the Tierra de Barros wine region and Zafra-Río Bodión comarcas near the Portuguese border.
Known originally as Fuente Roniel during Muslim rule with a Mozarabic community and necropolis, it was reconquered in the 13th century by Alfonso IX, passing to the Order of Santiago under Maestre Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa, who renamed it and granted its coat of arms amid Templar presence.
Elevated to villa status in the 14th century and ciudad in 1899, the town boasts a complete medieval muralla with four gates and a perimeter moat - one of Lower Extremadura's most impregnable fortresses plus a Renaissance marble fountain, Gothic-Mudejar parish church, and rich prehistoric-to-Roman archaeological layers as a declared Historic-Artistic Ensemble since 1998.
