Fuerte de Juviles
Spain, Spain
Fuerte de Juviles is an 8th-century Mozarabic fortress near Juviles village in Granada's Alpujarra region, Spain, serving as the main stronghold of the Subîlîs district through the Islamic period and into the Nasrid era. Site of a fierce 9th-10th century muladí rebellion battle against Caliph Abderramán III's forces—who besieged it with siege engines and cut off water supply—it later resisted Christian forces until ordered destroyed by Ferdinand the Catholic after 1500, with ruins reused by moriscos during the 1568-1571 Alpujarra War. Spanning seven construction phases up to the 16th century, its impressive remains include nine tower bases, 5m-high walls, three aljibes, wells, and panoramic views, now a BIC-protected site amid terraced agricultural fields.
