Fuerte de la Galea
Spain, Spain
Fuerte de la Galea is an 18th-century coastal fortress perched on cliffs at Punta Galea in Getxo, Biscay province, Basque Country, Spain, guarding the entrance to the Nervión River estuary and Bilbao's vital trade routes.
Designed in 1742 by Colonel Jaime Sycre and rapidly built within a year by 600 local laborers for 130,000 reales, its robust stone walls enclose barracks, powder magazines, fourteen cannon embrasures, and a defensive moat in classic Biscayan military style.
Never attacked despite its strategic role, it housed Biscay's first lighthouse from 1782 until the mid-19th century, later falling into ruin before becoming Getxo municipal property, now accessible via scenic coastal paths near Aixerrota Mill with dramatic Abra Bay views.
