Fuerte de Paymogo
Paymogo, Spain, Spain
Fuerte de Paymogo is a 15th-century fortress in Paymogo, Huelva province, Spain, originally constructed by the Knights Templar after their mid-13th-century conquest of the area and later rebuilt in the mid-17th century during conflicts with Portugal. Positioned amid the rugged Andévalo landscape to guard against border invasions, particularly during the War of the Spanish Succession when Portuguese forces raided nearby regions between 1704 and 1708, it now integrates with the Iglesia Castillo Santa María Magdalena church built into its crumbling ruins. Declared a National Monument in 1944 and cataloged as a Cultural Interest Site by Andalusia's regional government, the site reflects Paymogo's frontier history tied to military orders, mining booms, and later Iberian pig farming.
