Fuerte del Mazo
Santoña, Spain, Spain
Fuerte del Mazo, also known as Fort Napoleon, is a historic military fortification in Santoña, Cantabria, Spain, built in 1810 under orders from Napoleon Bonaparte to defend against potential British attacks during the Peninsular War.
Perched on Monte Buciero, its rectangular stone walls housed barracks for over 100 soldiers, officers' quarters, and the "Batería Rouget" artillery position added in 1811, offering strategic views over the Bay of Santoña, Berria beach, and surrounding areas.
Though never fully completed and supervised by Conde Cafarelli, it features Cantabria's only surviving Napoleonic-era guardhouse and now stands as accessible ruins popular for hikes, blending rugged history with stunning coastal panoramas.
