Gallarus Castle is a well-preserved 15th-century tower house located on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, near the famous Gallarus Oratory. It was built by the FitzGerald family, also known as the Geraldines, who held the hereditary title of Knight of Kerry, and it remains one of the few surviving fortified structures in the region. The four-storey stone tower was designed as both a residence and a defensive stronghold. It features thick walls, vaulted upper floors, mural passages within the walls, narrow windows, and a roof walk, all characteristic of Irish tower-house architecture. The castle was occupied by the FitzGerald family until the late 17th century. Today, Gallarus Castle is a protected National Monument and an important historic landmark on the Dingle Peninsula. Its strong state of preservation and proximity to other notable heritage sites make it a fascinating example of medieval life and architecture in Ireland.
