Garbally Castle is a ruined late medieval tower house located near Skehana in County Galway, Ireland. It was built in 1499 by Malachy O'Kelly, a member of the powerful O'Kelly clan, which was known for constructing fortified residences throughout the region. The castle was attacked and damaged only a few years later, in 1504, during a conflict with MacWilliam De Burgo. Today, the structure survives as an impressive ruin, with parts of its three-storey stone tower still standing. Visitors can see features typical of Irish medieval defenses, including thick walls, narrow windows, a pointed-arch entrance, gun loops, and a murder hole used to protect the entrance from attackers. Set in the rural Galway countryside, Garbally Castle offers a glimpse into Ireland’s medieval past and the turbulent history of local Gaelic clans.
