Gävle Castle
Gävle, Sweden, Sweden
Gävle Castle, located on the south bank of the Gavleån River in Gävle, Sweden, was originally constructed in 1593 by King Johan III as a fortress-like Renaissance structure with pinnacles and a tower to defend the city and harbor.
Severely damaged by a fire in 1727 that destroyed its tower and much of the main building, it was rebuilt in the mid-18th century under architect Carl Hårleman in a simpler French classicist style without the tower, reflecting contemporary tastes.
Today, the robust yellow-brick edifice serves as the official residence and offices for the County Governor of Gävleborg County, housing cultural exhibits and adjacent to a prison museum, symbolizing the city's enduring historical and administrative importance.
