Glimmingehus
Sweden, Sweden
Glimmingehus, located near Simrishamn in Sweden's Skåne region, stands as Scandinavia's best-preserved medieval stronghold, constructed between 1499 and 1506 by Danish knight Jens Holgersen Ulfstand and architect Adam van Düren.
This imposing stone fortress features massive 2.4-meter-thick lower walls tapering to 1.8 meters, defensive elements like murder holes for boiling pitch, false doors, dead-end corridors, moats, and drawbridges to deter peasant uprisings.
Commissioned during Skåne's Danish era, it blended luxury with fortification including hot air channels and lavish artifacts like Venetian glass before repurposing as a grain store in the 18th century; donated to the state in 1924, it now operates as a museum under the Swedish National Heritage Board.
