Verified Göksholm

Sweden, Sweden

Göksholm is Sweden's oldest privately owned building with continuous habitation since the 13th century, located on the southern shore of Lake Hjälmaren in Stora Mellösa, Örebro Municipality.

Originally a fortified medieval castle with a large tower, it underwent six stages of rebuilding and enlargement through the Middle Ages, later incorporating Renaissance elements like larger windows and portals under 17th-century owners such as Baron Knut Kurck and Baron Fleming.

Famously, in 1436, uprising leader Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson was murdered on its grounds by Måns Bengtsson, heir to the castle owner, and it remains a private residence today with preserved interiors showcasing noble Renaissance living.
