Golubac Fortress

Golubac Fortress is a striking medieval stronghold perched on a rocky slope overlooking the Danube River, just a few kilometers downstream from the small town of Golubac in eastern Serbia, near Veliko Gradište.

It sits at the entrance to the Djerdap Gorge, also known as the Iron Gates, where the wide Danube suddenly narrows between the Carpathian and Iron Mountains, giving it a dramatic and highly strategic position.

The fortress dates mainly from the late 14th century, though earlier Roman and Hungarian structures once stood on the same site, and it was later modified by the Ottomans, who added a distinctive cylindrical tower popularly called the “Hat Tower.”

With ten towers and thick stone walls climbing up the hillside, Golubac functioned as a key defensive point for control of the Danube and changed hands between Serbian, Ottoman, and Habsburg powers over several centuries; today it is well restored and widely regarded as one of the most picturesque and historically significant castles along the river.
