Gorteens Castle

Gorteens Castle is a ruined medieval castle located near Slieverue in south-east County Kilkenny, close to Waterford City. Today, the most visible surviving feature is a gatehouse, which is believed to have formed part of a much larger fortified complex that once stood on the site. The castle was associated with the powerful FitzGerald family, one of the most influential Anglo-Norman dynasties in Ireland. Following the Cromwellian conquest in the 17th century, the FitzGeralds lost the property, and ownership later passed to other families. Archaeological excavations have shown that the site was occupied and developed between the 16th and 18th centuries, revealing additional walls, buildings, and evidence of daily life. Although much of the original castle has disappeared, Gorteens Castle remains an important historic site that reflects the medieval and post-medieval history of County Kilkenny.
