Gortnaclea Castle

Gortnaclea Castle is a 16th-century tower house in County Laois, built on elevated ground overlooking the Gully River near the historic border between Ossory and Laois. Originally associated with the Fitzpatrick and later Fitzgerald families, it was designed as both a fortified residence and a defensive stronghold. The castle is best known for a dramatic event in April 1600, when Owney O'More held Thomas Butler, the 10th Earl of Ormond, known as the “Black Earl,” prisoner within its walls during a period of conflict between Irish forces and the English Crown. The earl was eventually released after negotiations and the payment of a substantial ransom. Today, the ruined five-storey tower remains an impressive landmark in the Laois countryside. Although parts of the structure have collapsed, its thick stone walls, defensive features, and commanding setting still convey the importance it once held in the region’s turbulent history.
