Göta Canal
Across Götaland, Sweden
The Göta Canal is a 190-kilometer-long waterway in the Götaland region of Sweden, connecting Lake Vänern with the Baltic Sea at Mem.
Constructed between 1810 and 1832, it was one of the largest engineering projects of its time, built primarily by hand with the labor of 58,000 soldiers over 22 years. The canal includes 58 locks to navigate the 92-meter elevation difference and passes through lakes, rivers, and man-made sections designed to create a navigable route across southern Sweden.
It was initiated by Baltzar von Platen with technical help from British engineer Thomas Telford and inaugurated by King Karl XIV Johan. Today, the canal serves as a popular tourist attraction, offering boat cruises, cycling, and walking paths, and is cherished for its picturesque landscapes and historical significance as a masterpiece of early 19th-century engineering.
