Gråborg
Sweden, Sweden
Gråborg is the largest prehistoric ringfort in Sweden, located on the island of Öland near Färjestaden.
Constructed around AD 300 during the late Iron Age amid turbulent times, its massive circular stone walls span 640 meters in circumference and stand 4-7 meters tall, originally featuring multiple gateways later modified in the Middle Ages.
Enlarged and reused from the 12th century as an administrative center and trade hub owned by Vadstena Abbey, it includes medieval ruins of St. Knut's Chapel nearby and was even defended against Danish forces as late as 1677, with archaeological finds now housed in Kalmar Museum.
