Grannagh Castle, also known as Granny Castle, is a well-preserved medieval fortress situated on the River Suir near Waterford City, on the County Kilkenny side of the river. Built by the Norman le Poer family in the late 13th century on the site of an earlier Irish stronghold, it occupied a strategically important position that controlled river traffic and trade. The castle later passed to the powerful Butler family in 1375 and became one of their most important residences. During the late 15th and early 16th centuries, it was closely associated with Margaret FitzGerald, the famous Countess of Ormond, and served as a symbol of Butler influence in south-eastern Ireland. Today, Grannagh Castle remains an impressive example of a Hiberno-Norman castle, featuring a large tower house, defensive walls, and corner towers. Its riverside setting, architectural heritage, and connections to some of Ireland’s most influential medieval families make it an important historic landmark.
