Grantstown Castle is a rare circular tower house located in County Laois, overlooking Grantstown Lake. Unlike the more common rectangular Irish tower houses, this unusual five-storey limestone structure was built as a fortified residence and features thick defensive walls, gun loops, a mural staircase, fireplaces, and other medieval architectural elements. The castle was associated with the Lords of Upper Ossory and later passed through several owners during the political upheavals of the 17th century, including Gilbert Rawson, Edmond Morris, and members of the Fitzpatrick family. Its history reflects the changing fortunes of landowners in Ireland during this turbulent period. Although now roofless and partially ruined, Grantstown Castle remains one of County Laois’s most distinctive medieval monuments. Its uncommon circular design, lakeside setting, and surviving defensive features make it an important and visually striking example of Ireland’s castle heritage.
