Gripenberg Castle
Sweden, Sweden
Gripenberg Castle, located near Tranås in Småland, Sweden, stands as the largest wooden castle in the country and one of its oldest surviving manor houses.
Built in 1663 as a hunting lodge by field marshal Carl Gustaf Wrangel, possibly designed by architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, it features a broad central structure with four corner towers and eight one-story wings originally painted red before receiving yellow paneling around 1780.
Named after Wrangel's mother Margareta Grip, the Baroque-style wooden estate passed to the von Söderling family by the late 17th century and remains privately owned without public access today.
