The Holy Shrine of Imam Husayn in Karbala, Iraq, is the most sacred site for Shia Muslims worldwide, enshrining the tomb of Husayn ibn Ali, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, martyred with his family and companions in the Battle of Karbala on October 10, 680 CE during Ashura against Umayyad forces led by Yazid I.

First enclosed as a simple mosque by Mukhtar al-Thaqafi in 684 CE, it endured cycles of destruction by caliphs like al-Mansur and Mutawakkil, with major reconstructions by Buyid ruler Adud al-Dawla in 977 CE adding domes and walls, Safavid Shah Abbas I in 1622 gilding the structure with tiles and brass screens, and later Qajar and modern expansions creating vast courtyards, golden minarets, and intricate muqarnas portals blending Persian and Ottoman styles. 

Drawing up to 20 million pilgrims yearly, especially for Arba'een, its gilded dome and silver cenotaph symbolize sacrifice and resilience amid historical invasions, Wahhabi attacks in 1801, and recent conflicts.​
