Hope Castle is a historic country house overlooking Lough Muckno in Castleblayney, County Monaghan. Built in 1799 for the Blayney family and originally known as Blayney Castle, it replaced an earlier fortified residence that gave the town of Castleblayney its name. In 1853, the estate was purchased by the wealthy Hope family, from whom the castle takes its current name. Set within beautiful parkland beside the lake, the house became an important local landmark and was associated with several notable residents, including members of British royalty. Over the 20th century, Hope Castle served various roles, including a military barracks, hospital, convent, and hotel. Although a major fire in 2010 left the building severely damaged, it remains a significant part of County Monaghan’s heritage and a prominent feature of the scenic Lough Muckno landscape.
