Hörningsholms Slott
Sweden, Sweden
Hörningsholms Slott, located on a cliff overlooking an inlet of the Baltic Sea near Södertälje in Södermanland, Sweden, originated as a late 15th-century castle likely built by Nils Bosson Sture, evolving from a medieval farmstead once held by Karl Ulfsson in the 13th century.
Expanded into a large Late Medieval-Renaissance fortress with towers and enclosed courtyards by the Sture family until 1616, it endured Danish pillaging in 1520 and was completely destroyed by Russian troops in 1719 before reconstruction from 1746-1752 under Nils Bonde af Björnö to architect Carl Hårleman's French Rococo-inspired design featuring symmetrical wings and terraces.
Remaining in the Bonde family since, the privately owned manor houses an art collection, cocklestoves, and library within its preserved basements and ramparts, though not open to the public.
