Verified Houska Castle

Blatce, Czechia, Czech Republic (Czechia)

Houska Castle is an early Gothic castle located in the municipality of Blatce in the Liberec Region of Czechia, about 47 km north of Prague.

It was built in the second half of the 13th century, probably on the orders of King Ottokar II of Bohemia, to serve as an administrative center overseeing royal estates rather than for defense or residence. The castle is uniquely situated in a forested, swampy, and mountainous area with no nearby water sources, trade routes, or external fortifications, which adds to its mysterious character.

One of the most famous legends about Houska Castle is that it was constructed over a large hole believed to be a gateway to Hell, and local folklore says that the chapel above the hole was meant to keep demons locked inside. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone Renaissance modifications but retained much of its Gothic architecture, including a chapel with medieval wall paintings, a Green Room with late-Gothic paintings, and a knights' drawing room.

It was occupied by the Wehrmacht during World War II, and the Nazis reportedly conducted occult experiments there. Today, Houska Castle remains one of the best-preserved castles of its period and continues to attract visitors intrigued by its eerie atmosphere and legends.
