Hovdala Castle, located in Hässleholm Municipality in Scania, southern Sweden, was first mentioned in 1130 but features visible structures primarily from the early 16th century, including anchoring irons dated 1511 on one facade.

Originally a Danish stronghold during turbulent border conflicts, it withstood sieges in the Kalmar War and Scanian War, with its gate tower from the early 1600s boasting three-foot-thick walls, while later additions include an eastern building from 1681-82 and a southern wing from 1805 around a courtyard once enclosed by a moat and drawbridge.

Extensively restored since 1993 using traditional methods across over 100 rooms to reveal its layered history, the site earned a Europa Nostra award in 2004 for authentic preservation and now operates as a cultural venue with guided tours, gardens, and events showcasing middle-class aristocratic life.
