Verified Hukvaldy Castle

Hukvaldy, Czech Republic (Czechia)

Hukvaldy Castle in the Czech Republic is the third-largest castle ruin in the country, built in the late 13th century by the Hückeswagen family as a strategic fortress on an important trade route.

Over five centuries, it was expanded and changed ownership multiple times, mainly held by the bishops of Olomouc and various noble families. The castle was never conquered, even withstanding a siege during the Thirty Years' War, but was eventually abandoned after a fire in 1762 caused by lightning and problems with its water supply.

Today, the ruins are well-preserved and open to the public, featuring the Baroque Chapel of St. Andrew, exhibition spaces, and a surrounding game park with deer and mouflons. Hukvaldy Castle is also notable as the birthplace of the composer Leoš Janáček, whose legacy is celebrated in an annual music festival held at the site. The castle's dramatic hilltop location offers scenic views of the Beskydy Mountains and remains a key cultural and historical landmark in Moravian-Silesia.
