Ismantorp Fortress
Sweden, Sweden
Ismantorp Fortress is the ruins of a large ringfort on Öland island in Sweden, constructed during the Migration Period around 200 CE and used intermittently until about 650 CE.
One of roughly 20 similar prehistoric fortifications on Öland, it features a massive limestone wall nearly 300 meters in circumference with nine gates, enclosing 95 houses arranged in 12 blocks around a central open space and a circular building.
Never permanently occupied, the site served defensive or communal purposes amid Iron Age settlement patterns, visited by Carl Linnaeus during his 1741 journey and now accessible as a well-preserved archaeological landmark drawing history enthusiasts.
