Ivangorod Fortress
Ivangorod, Russia, Russia
Ivangorod Fortress in Ivangorod, Russia, directly opposite Estonia's Narva Castle across the Narova River, was swiftly constructed in the summer of 1492 by order of Grand Prince Ivan III as Russia's first quadrilateral stone citadel to counter Livonian Knights and secure Baltic access, featuring 14-meter limestone walls enclosing 1600 square meters with square towers inspired by Moscow's Kremlin.
Expanded after a 1496 Swedish siege with trapezoidal outer fortifications, round towers like Gunpowder and Well, and the Boyar Embankment by 1564 under Ivan the Terrible, it changed hands repeatedly during Russo-Swedish wars before Peter the Great's 1704 recapture and 18th-century bastion upgrades.
Its stark, symmetrical design endured centuries of conflict, now preserved as a museum showcasing medieval border defense architecture.
