The Izborsk Fortress in Izborsk, Russia, is one of Western Russia's oldest and most impressive medieval strongholds, first mentioned in 862 as a Varangian outpost ruled by Truvor, Rurik's brother, with its initial wooden defenses on Truvor Hill giving way to stone construction starting around 1303 on nearby Zheravya (Crane) Hill for better strategic positioning.

 Rebuilt comprehensively in 1330 under Pskov posadnik Sheloga using local limestone, the triangular citadel features 850 meters of walls up to 3-5 meters thick enclosing 2.4 hectares, including the ancient Lukovka (Onion) Tower as an early stone watchtower and armory, later joined by seven others like Talavskaya, Vyshka, Ryabinovka, and Temnushka, plus defensive barbicans, gates with portcullises, and an underground spring passage.

 It withstood countless invasions thanks to 14th-16th century reinforcements for firearms, the 1344 St. Nicholas Cathedral, and emergency dwellings, remaining a Pskov border fortress until modern preservation as a museum showcasing its raw power and Slavic heritage.
